KENYA REGISTERED COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING (KRCHN)

COURSE OVERVIEW

This is a basic diploma course in nursing. The KRCHN course is a combination of three major areas of nurse training, namely;
1. General Nursing
2. Community Health Nursing
3. Midwifery
The objective of the program is to train nurses who will supplement the nurse’s work force in the health care environment thus meeting the ever changing patient needs in our modern society. After which they should be able to demonstrate competence in addressing and managing the emerging health care challenges locally, regionally and globally.
This can be achieved through the effective implementation of the national curriculum that is provided by the Nursing Council of Kenya, which is tailored towards realizing the institutional vision and mission of being a leading regional medical training college of excellence in training of nurses and other health professionals.
At the end of the training, the graduate will be a qualified clinical nurse, community nurse and also a midwife. The expected fields of work include hospitals, communities, research institutions and various health care industry settings

COURSE DURATION

The course takes 3 and 1/2 years which includes both theoretical experience and clinical practice.
The course content includes:
• Community health nursing
• Midwifery
• Medical surgical nursing
• Paediatrics
• Psychiatry
• Casualty/ emergency
• Theatre nursing
• Other selected experiences

Intake:

March and September every year
Application Deadline: February and August

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

- A person wishing to be admitted into KENYA REGISTERED COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING (KRCHN) must satisfy the requirements set out by the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
- Have a KCSE (mean grade) C plain or above
- The mandatory subjects should include a minimum of:
o C (Plain) in Biology
o C (Plain) English or Kiswahili
o C- (Minus) in Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry

DIPLOMA IN CLINICAL NUTRITION AND DIETETICS

COURSE OVERVIEW

Clinical nutritionists and dietitians work in clinical settings, often in one-on-one situations with both the inpatients and outpatients in assessing, designing and implementing dietary strategies and nutritional therapies. The main purpose is to address particular medical conditions which may include hypertension, diabetes etc. Clinical nutritionists may also be called upon to come up with plans of action in situations where treatment is concerned such as kidney dialysis, chemotherapy and Paediatric interventions.
Ram Training College is accredited by the Kenya Nutritionists and Dietitians Institute (KNDI) to train Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

- A person wishing to be admitted into a Diploma in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics must satisfy the requirements set out by KICD and KNDI.
- The candidate must have obtained a minimum of C- (MINUS) in KCSE.
- Alternatively, admissions shall be granted to holders of a Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics having sat for KNEC and passed.

COURSE DURATION

Three (3) years full-time plus three (3) attachments/Clinical Placements at the end of each year in Sub-County Hospitals, County Referral Hospitals and Referral Hospitals respectively across the county.

CERTIFICATE IN SOCIAL MEDICAL WORK (KNEC PROGRAMME)

COURSE OVERVIEW

This is a one year course whose objective is to equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them perform and manage development activities in society.
Medical social workers typically work in a hospital, outpatient clinics, community health agency, skilled nursing facility, long term care facility or hospice. They work with patients for psychological help and counseling.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum qualification: KCSE D (PLAIN)
Course open to Beginners, Community Development workers, Social Welfare Workers and Community health assistants.

One year

CERTIFICATE IN PERIOPERATIVE THEATRE TECHNOLOGY

COURSE OVERVIEW

Perioperative Theatre Technology course equips the trainee with a wide range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to provide assistance to professional healthcare workers for the care of patients in an operating theatre room as well as prepare and maintain theatre equipment and safe handling of surgical instruments.

Perioperative Theatre Technology consists of competencies that an individual should achieve to provide services in an:
• Operation Theatre set up in a Hospital
• Operating Theatre machines and equipment
• Supporting Surgeons Theater Nurses in Clinical Procedures in the hospital.
• Preparation of Operating Theatre room and related services.

Perioperative is a process of treatment occurring or performed at or during the period of an operation. Perioperative care is the care that is given before and after surgery. It takes place in hospitals, in surgical centers attached to hospitals, in freestanding surgical centers, or health care provider’s offices. Apart from the fundamental educational requirement, outstanding scientific skill, communication skills and behavioural skills are necessary for surgical technologists. An eye for detail accuracy and critical thinking is a must. Team work is essential as the job necessitate the person to work in partnership with other healthcare providers. Other prerequisites necessary are optimistic attitude, compassion and high levels of endurance and dedication. They must have the aptitude to work under minimal regulation, unpredictable shifts and long hours and must remain alert during operations. Surgical technologist also must have outstanding deftness to grip various instrument s in complicated ways.
